Background of the study
Vocational education is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for fostering self-reliance among youths, particularly in regions where traditional academic paths do not necessarily lead to immediate employment opportunities. In Ajaokuta Local Government Area, Kogi State, vocational education programs have been implemented to equip young people with practical skills that promote entrepreneurial initiatives and independent livelihoods. These programs cover a broad spectrum of disciplines, ranging from technical skills such as welding and carpentry to modern sectors like information technology and digital marketing, which collectively foster a culture of self-reliance and innovation (Olawale, 2023). The emphasis on vocational education in Ajaokuta is driven by the need to address high youth unemployment rates and to create opportunities for self-employment. By providing hands-on training and practical exposure, these programs help youths develop the competencies required to establish their own businesses or secure skilled employment. Despite the potential benefits, challenges such as inadequate training facilities, limited access to quality resources, and insufficient mentorship hinder the full realization of self-reliance among youths (Olawale, 2023; Fashola, 2024). Additionally, societal attitudes that favor conventional academic education over vocational training further impede the uptake of these programs. However, the success stories emerging from similar contexts underscore the transformative impact of vocational education in enabling youths to overcome economic challenges and achieve personal independence. This study will examine the role of vocational education in fostering self-reliance among youths in Ajaokuta, analyzing its effectiveness in equipping young people with the necessary skills and confidence to navigate the complexities of the modern labor market. The findings will contribute to a better understanding of how vocational education can serve as a catalyst for economic empowerment and social mobility among youths (Olawale, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of vocational education in promoting self-reliance, youths in Ajaokuta Local Government Area face numerous obstacles that limit their ability to achieve economic independence. One of the primary challenges is the gap between the skills taught in vocational programs and the practical demands of the job market. Many vocational training centers struggle with outdated equipment and inadequate facilities, which prevent them from delivering quality, hands-on instruction (Fashola, 2024). Consequently, graduates often lack the technical proficiency required to successfully launch or sustain independent business ventures. Moreover, societal prejudices that prioritize formal academic qualifications over vocational training further diminish the perceived value of these programs, leading to low enrollment and suboptimal performance outcomes. Additionally, the absence of robust mentorship and follow-up support after course completion leaves many youths without the necessary guidance to transition into self-employment effectively. These issues are compounded by limited funding and insufficient government support, which further restrict the scope and impact of vocational education initiatives in the region. As a result, the intended benefits of fostering self-reliance and economic empowerment remain largely unrealized among the youth. This study seeks to critically examine the factors that impede the successful implementation of vocational education in fostering self-reliance among youths in Ajaokuta, with the aim of developing recommendations to overcome these challenges (Olawale, 2023).
